The patch file format already has a specification for "patch volume". For
some reason the SDK documents this as 'not used'. I allow for it in my
software now, though all patches I've seen to date set this to max volume
(i.e., 127). It's trivial to support. Not sure why Gravis/Forte don't.

Consider yourself lucky. I release things for the GUS and never hear a peep
(okay, 2 or 3 over several months).

Subject: MIDI tracks go silent in Windows
Fellow GUS'ers,
I have had a nagging problem for the last month or so running Winjammer player
or the JUKER player. While playing a list of songs, all of a sudden, almost
all of the tracks would go silent in the next and subsequent songs. No WIN
application would play patches or songs after that, although if I went thru
enough songs I might hear a track playing. Does any of this sound familiar?
I finally discovered the cause of the problem last night. It turned out that
one midi file named IFULEAVE.MID has a series of the following Controller
Changes at the end of every track:
Channel#, Controller 11, value (decreasing from say 99----> 0)
You veteran midi composers are probably having a good laugh right now
since this Controller Change is some kind of (master?) volume control for the channel.
So once this one song ran all the way thru to the end, all of the subsequent
songs would be pretty much silent unless they had some channels that exceeded
the numbers used in this song (and this song used around 13 channels so most
all songs were completely silent).
I stuck a Controller 11, 99 at the beginning of the NEXT song I wanted to
play and the volumes were back to normal. Also the Winjammer player RESET
option did not entirely fix the problem although you would think so when
reading the description of what it does. Maybe the RESET doesn't apply
entirely to the GUS?? The RESET didn't mention a Controller 11 change as
a method for resetting the channel volumes to maximum.
Finally, there was no problem in PLAYMIDI -- it must properly reset things
after each song.
Hope this helps anyone who might have seen this problem. If a more knowledgeable
person can give an explanation of the Controller 11 function I'd like to see it.
Also, I assume the fix is to do a final Controller 11, 127 change in the IFULEAVE.MID
file and any others that have this offending change. If there's a better way
of resetting let me know.

I've had the same problems when I'm using a clean DOS system. With my
fully loaded TSR, expanded memory, etc., PLAYMIDI -m seems to work fine.
I've noticed the same peculiar behavior with older PLAYMIDIs as well.
At least the bug with PLAYMIDI -m and the DOS clock appears to be fixed. :-)

If I may guess: did you upgrade from the 2.06 disk set? I got my own
GUS with this disk set. A little later when 2.06a came along, there
were a few changes. The tremstr.pat file that was not yet present
in 2.06 was added, for example, and I also remember the name of the
honky tonky piano patch had changed. If you don't have a tremstr.pat,
this probably is the case. Then what you should do is find the GUS00??.zip
that contains the patch to go from disk set 2.06 to 2.06a, which will
be still around on some of the ftp sites, install this over your
2.06 installation, and then again install gus0038. Maybe the only thing
you really need to do is rename two or three .pat files, and add tremstr.pat,
I'm not sure.

I have downloaded your patches, but haven't had time to check them out.
I have discovered _usually_ that silence is a good thing and that no news
is good news, so I think I speak for a lot of people who download stuff
when I say "Keep up the good work and post more patches!". As you've noticed
some (including myself) won't say anything unless it's to complain.
That's a bad trait, I know, but anyway your patches are appriciated. Thanks.
BTW, on the subject of patches, anybody out there have a patch of a good
orchestral gong? I'm surprised it's not part of the GM set. An orchestral
bass drum would be great, too. Suggestions for those who don't know what
to sample...(-:

Subject: Windows MIDI Mapper
Does anyone understand the Windows MIDI Mapper?
It appears to store all patch maps & key maps in one big encrypted file.
I had created some custom patch/key maps, but GUS0038 installed a whole new
map file. How can I use my custom maps with the new ones from GUS0038?
They are in different files and I see no import/export functions. How would
I share individual maps with other users without replacing them all?
All help/comments are appreciated.

I get the exact same results -- Ok dismisses the initial screen and
nothing else happens. But I had the same problem pre-GUS0038. It *was*
working, once. Now that I think about it, it might have stopped
working about the time I installed the drivers from Patch Maker Lite
(are the PML drivers the same as the '38 ones?).
It's too bad because Mod4Win sounded a lot better than MODUS did.
